A 5-year-old male is brought to the primary care clinic by his mother for a fever of 101 along with a runny nose and sore throat. The mother reports that the child has been less active and more cranky than usual for the past two days. The mother notes that she herself has had a mild cough and increased fatigue, but has been able to go to work without difficulty. Upon physical examination, the boy has a temperature of 100.5 and a pulse of 105 bpm. He has clear rhinorrhea (runny nose) and mild erythema (redness) of his pharynx.
