Biology 160 – At home activities
Objectives: Upon completion of this lab activity, you should be able to:
1. Understand the polar nature of water in terms of charges across the water molecule, and subsequent
hydrogen bonding.
2. Distinguish between hydrophilic and hydrophobic substances
3. Explain the concept of pH using the following terms: hydrogen ion, hydroxide ion, concentration,
acid/acidic, base/basic, alkaline, neutral, and pH scale.
Introduction: Chemistry, the interactions and reactions of atoms to form molecules, is the basis for all of life. Living
organisms are essentially "bags" of chemicals--specific chemicals that perform all of the functions necessary to
keep their collective body alive. In this lab, we will examine several fundamental properties of chemicals. We will
consider the different types of chemical bonds that can form and how these bonds affect the larger properties of
chemicals, such as water, with which we are more familiar.

1. Draw and label the structure of an atom that has 2 electrons, 2 protons, and 2 neutrons.
a. What is the atomic number of this atom?
b. Is this atom stable on its own? Explain your answer.
