1. Local Soldier Mourned
Michael Bumgartner was sitting in his living room Thursday when he
looked out his window to see three black men walking up to his front
door. They were dressed in military uniforms and had the stern,
intense look of people bearing bad news.
When he opened the door, the men stepped inside and confirmed
Bumgartner's suspicions. His 21-year-old son, they told him, had
been killed in Iraq. William V. Bumgartner died three days after a
roadside bomb exploded, wounding him and killing three other
soldiers instantly.
Bumgartner described his son as smart and dedicated to his Army
comrades.
2. Indian Charged in Deaths
A Seminole Indian was charged Tuesday in the shooting deaths of
his two children, who were asleep in their home when they were
killed.
Russell Shelton, 48, was taken into custody at his parents' home.
Police said a neighbor called to report that Shelton had been seen
walking in the street crying, holding a handgun.
Seminole tribal leaders announced Tuesday that they will seek
jurisdiction of the case on the grounds that the tribe has sovereignty
