Text: Scenario: Conversation between two nurses (In charge (IC) & New grad) in the clinical setting.
IC: Do you need something?
Nurse: Yes, I need help with the patient.
IC: Give me a minute.
Meanwhile, the new nurse was called by another nurse to give a hand with another patient.
IC (on phone): I don't understand why these new nurses don't want to work hard. We shouldn't always have to help them.
IC (on phone): I have to look after these new nurses and manage 25 patients. We have never had enough experienced nurses. So, now our patient satisfaction score is way down.
Patient visitor to new grad: Can you check on my mom? No one is answering her call bell.
New grad to visitor: Sure.
New grad to IC: Can I talk with you for a moment? When I asked for help this morning, your response was rude and a little embarrassing to me.
New grad: It is important for me to feel supported to be a better nurse in the future. So, we can work together for the patients.
IC: I'm so sorry. It was not intentional. I got a call that my father was not well, the unit was also busy, and I needed to complete monthly reports. I do value your presence.
