Case Study - Lotup Bank Plc
Lotup Bank Plc is one of the licensed deposit money banks (DMBs) in Nigeria. The bank operates a National banking license authorization with branches all over the country with an array of sophisticated banking products on offer. The management of the bank saw the newly introduced holding company banking structure approved by CBN for DMBs as an opportunity to further diversify its operations, increase its branch network, and improve its overall performance. However, no consideration was accorded to the availability of internal capabilities required to successfully implement the HoldCo banking structure.
In the last four years, performance has not been good for the bank while competition and the business environment have been intense and unfriendly. As foreign banks establish a presence in many states in the country with high operating standards and quality technologies, most domestic banks have re-engineered their processes and repositioned for competitiveness. Surprisingly, Lotup Bank Management has found their bank losing out to competition, due to its inability to cope with global trends and best practices currently prevailing in the industry.
