Ask a probing question about their experience developing the coding form and provide the foundation, or a rationale, for the question on how parents’ engagement affects children’s independent play at a public playground. Observations would take place naturally in the playground, with trained observers acting as concealed observers to avoid changing how parents or children behave. Observers would stay unobtrusive by blending in with other adults, using small devices to record behaviors, and varying observation times to reduce chances of being noticed. The three specific behaviors I would code are verbal encouragement like praising the child, physical assistance like helping the child on equipment, and parental disengagement which is being distracted by a phone for over ten seconds. These would be observed during three situations: when a child starts a new activity, shows distress, or engages in risky play. By coding these behaviors systematically, the study could reveal how parents’ actions relate to their children’s independence during play.
