Tyler Renn PSYC 280 OCA Gretchen Hendrickson 2/22/2024 Psychological Challenges Of Retiring Athletes The topic of Sports Psychology that will be discussed is the psychological challenges of retiring athletes. For many people, the transition from peak competitive performance to post-sport life can be very difficult. Retirement can cause emotional and psychological hurdles that can affect the mental well-being of many athletes. This Topic is directly related to sport psychology because of the impact that it has on the mental and emotional well-being of athletes after their career is over. In “Adaptation to life after sport for retired athletes,” it discusses how the study gives good insight into how sport psychology can play a role in creating support mechanisms to address the needs of retiring athletes. Helping them with mental health, life skills, and social support to help them succeed. While another article shows the perspective of how to help athletes as peers. The article talks about how athletes need a support system after retirement as they have leaned on so many people like coaches, trainers, and teammates throughout their life. Once the athlete's sport is over and they no longer have these support systems in their life, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed, and many struggle to overcome these. One of the main principles to follow shown in, “The End of the Road,” is to retire to something, not from something. This shows the idea that athletes should try to find new hobbies or even other sports to do after retirement. This can help replace the feeling of emptiness in a lot of athletes because many believe their sport is the only way they can create relevance and purpose in their lives. The type of person in sports that will be most directly affected is the athlete. The athlete is the one who deals with the complexities of identity loss, switching from a competitive routine, and creating a new purpose beyond their athletic career. Although coaches and psychologists may be affected in this situation, the athlete's personal experiences and struggles are why the athlete will be most directly affected. Check for plagiarism.
