- Begins before birth but is completed only upon fertilization.
- Involves the maturation of germ cells into ova.
- Proceeds through stages including oogonia, primary oocytes (suspended in prophase I until puberty), secondary oocytes, and mature ovum (upon fertilization).
- Also involves meiosis, resulting in one large ovum and smaller polar bodies (which typically degenerate).

How are Gametes Delivered?

1. In Males:
- Storage and Transport: Mature sperm are stored in the epididymis.
- Ejaculation: During sexual arousal, sperm travel through the vas deferens, mixing with seminal fluid from accessory glands (seminal vesicles, prostate gland, and bulbourethral glands) to form semen.
- Delivery: Semen is expelled through the urethra during ejaculation and delivered into the female reproductive tract.

2. In Females:
- Ovulation: The release of a mature egg from the ovary into the fallopian tube (oviduct).
- Transport: The egg travels through the fallopian tube, where it may encounter sperm for fertilization.
- Cervical and Uterine Sperm Transport: Sperm deposited in the vagina travel through the cervix and uterus, propelled by muscle contractions and assisted by the cervical mucus.

What is Fertilization?

Fertilization is the process wherein a sperm and an egg unite to form a zygote. This typically occurs in the fallopian tube. The resulting zygote undergoes cell division and eventually implants in the uterine wall, initiating pregnancy.
