Think of a slinky being pushed and pulled; the coils compress and then spread apart in the direction of the wave movement.

3. What are Surface Waves?Surface waves are mechanical waves that travel along the surface of a medium and exhibit characteristics of both transverse and longitudinal waves. The particles in the medium move in an elliptical motion, combining both up-and-down and back-and-forth movements. Surface waves decay more rapidly with depth into the medium.
