Flower color in a particular plant is controlled by two independently assorting genes, each with two alleles. The synthesis of flower pigment is a two-step process catalyzed by two different enzymes, each controlled by a different gene:
white precursor ββββ enzyme A ββββ> purple intermediate ββββ enzyme B ββββ> red product
The dominant A allele codes for the normal form of enzyme A and the dominant B allele codes for the normal form of enzyme B. Each recessive allele (a and b) produces a nonfunctional form of the respective enzyme. The above pathway is the only source of the purple and red pigments.
In the P generation, an AAbb female (purple color) is crossed with an aaBB male plant (white color). The red colored F1 progeny (AaBb) are self-fertilized to produce the F2 generation, in which the following phenotypes were observed (shown in the table below).
