How did Jean Baptiste Lamarck's theory of the mechanism of evolution differ fundamentally from Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection? What primary flaw do you see in Lamarck's theory, especially considering the study of inheritance?
Adi S.
In your own opinion, which theory do think is more plausible? Is it Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection or Jean Lamarck's Theory of Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics?
Sri K.
1. Jean Baptiste Lamarck published his theory of evolution in 1809. In his theory, Lamarck proposed that traits like the long neck of a giraffe evolved over time by ‘use and disuse’. According to this idea, each giraffe stretched its neck over its lifetime to reach leaves on high branches. The long neck acquired by the giraffe was passed on to its offspring, according to the idea of ‘inheritance of acquired characteristics’. This process continued over many, many generations to produce the long necks of giraffes living today. Based on your understanding of natural selection, explain why Lamarck’s theory is incorrect, and describe a possible evolutionary process for the lengthening of the giraffe’s neck that satisfies the conditions for natural selection.
