Patient "C" is a 45-year-old female undergoing a complete hysterectomy. She presents with the following lab results: a. Hemoglobin: 7.0 g/dL b. Hematocrit: 23% c. RBC Count: 2.5 x 10^6/uL d. WBC Count: 5.5 x 10^3/uL e. Platelet Count: 90 x 10^3/uL f. RBC morphology: Hypochromic and normocytic What are the abnormal lab results? How many units of blood will the doctor want transfused prior to surgery? The patient is very uncomfortable with the volunteer blood supply and wants her brother to donate a unit of RBCs. What must be done to the unit prior to transfusion and how does that affect the expiration date of the unit?

Your patient is a 60-year-old woman with anemia. Her hematocrit is 17%; she has been experiencing subtle gastrointestinal bleeding over many weeks. Her physician requests 4 units of RBCs for transfusion. The patient phenotypes as group AB, D-positive. Her antibody screen is negative on the sample drawn in the emergency department. Patient records indicate a previously detected anti-E. Only 3 group AB, D-positive RBC units are available in the blood bank’s inventory. The blood bank’s inventory contains RBC donor units of all ABO and D types.

Patient "B" is a 22-year-old female with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She is experiencing bleeding from her gums, and she has bruising and petechiae present. She presents with the following lab results: Hemoglobin: 12.0 g/dL Hematocrit: 37% RBC Count: 3.5 x 10^6/uL WBC Count: 9.0 x 10^3/uL Platelet Count: 16 x 10^3/uL RBC morphology: Normochromic and normocytic What are the abnormal lab results? Which blood component would you transfuse? What should be the special requirements of the unit? After the transfusion of the above blood component, what are her expected lab results?
