Exercise, Stress and Mental Health for teenagers A recent study was conducted to investigate whether gender and amount of physical activity in teenagers influences their stress levels. Data was collected by surveying 1508 adolescent students (13 to 18 years) in Norway on their frequency of physical activity (number of hours per week) and stress levels (low or high). Researchers also recorded the gender (Male/Female/Other) of each participant. Researchers found the following: Adolescents who reported they participated in physical activity 7-9 hours per week or more reported lower stress levels than those who participated in physical activity less than 7 hours per week. There was no significant difference in time spent on physical activity across genders. Male participants had lower stress levels on average than the participants identifying as female or other. 1. Take That, You Dirty Rat 1. Dr. John Vorva, a neuropsychologist at the Chevy Institute, has found that moderate stress can be good for immune system response. 2. Stress is a well-known fact of life among high-pressure executives, working moms, and sleep-deprived college students. Besides making people ill-tempered, stress may also make people sick. 3. Many other studies on animals and humans have shown that stress lowers immune system responses by reducing the number of white blood cells and interleukin, their communication chemical. Dr. Vorva suggests that stress many not be all bad. 4. Vorva exposed rats to different amounts of stress, then measured their white blood cell counts and interleukin levels. 5. Each day the rats in one group were removed from their cages, petted, and placed in a small box for 10 minutes. This was a mild variation from an otherwise rodent-like day of eating and playing. 6. The rats in the second group were petted, placed in the box where a grid on the floor delivered three mild electric shocks during the 10-minute experiment. 7. The third group was treated the same except they received three long, strong, annoying electric shocks. 8. The last group was left in their cages and not handled. 9. Vorva suspected the increased amount of stress would result in increased immune suppression. At the end of the week-long-experiment, white blood cell counts and interleukin levels were measured. 10. As he expected, the slightly-stressed rats showed immunosuppression of about 10%. 11. The highly-stressed rats showed up to 70% immunosuppression. 12. The moderately-stressed rodents showed an amazing 30% increase in immune system response. 13. Vorva's research shows there is a range of stress that can be good for the immune system, at least in rats. If this is true for humans, our modern way of life may not be as detrimental as many people think.
