In both females and males, gamete formation is controlled by the HPGA. The hypothalamus releases GnRH which acts on the anterior pituitary and causes the release of FSH. In males, FSH acts on Sertoli cells while in females it stimulates follicles to develop. In males, the FSH triggers its target cells to produce Sertoli cells that will promote sperm cell production. In males, LH causes Leydig cells to produce excess testosterone that will promote sperm cell production. In females, estrogens from the growing follicle triggers a spike in LH resulting in ovulation. In males, excess testosterone causes feedback inhibitor APB (Androgen Binding Protein) to be released and act as a negative feedback inhibitor. In females, the remnants of the follicle, the corpus luteum, produces progesterone and estrogen. Those hormone levels drop as the structure degenerates into the corpus albicans and menstruation occurs following ovulation.

2. Which hormone: a. stimulates gonadotropin release? b. triggers ovulation? c. stimulates follicular growth? d. stimulates testosterone release? e. begins repair of the endometrium? f. is known as the pregnancy hormone? g. stimulates the corpus luteum? 3. Trace the pathway of a sperm from its site of production until it fertilizes an oocyte. 4. Based on your understanding of the hormonal control of spermatogenesis, how might the abuse of anabolic steroids lead to sterility? 5. Based on your understanding of the hormonal control of oogenesis, how does the birth control pill prevent pregnancy?
