The parotid ducts pass saliva from the submandibular and sublingual glands. b. The parotid ducts pass saliva from the parotid glands into the oral cavity. The submandibular ducts pass saliva from the submandibular and sublingual glands. c. The submandibular ducts pass saliva from the parotid and submandibular glands into the oral cavity. SALIVARY GLANDS: SUBMANDIBULAR, SUBLINGUAL, OR PAROTID GLAND? The three different salivary glands differ in the proportion of serous and mucous cells that they contain; thus the three glands have different contributions to your saliva. It is not necessary to memorize the histology of each of the three different salivary glands but to be able to recognize that you are looking at a salivary gland and identify the basic features. HISTOLOGY OF THE SALIVARY GLANDS Label the following: ducts mucous cells and mucous acini serous cells and serous acini NOTES: at low power, you are looking at the individual lobules of the salivary gland. At medium power, you see 2 of these lobules, with acini and ducts. At high power, you can see 1 duct and two different types of acini. Serous acini will be purple, with granules. Mucous acini will be clear because the fatty mucins have been dissolved during slide preparation. low power (cross-section) medium (2 lobules) high power (histology)
