III. Heart valves A. The two atrioventricular (AV) valves are the valves located between the right atrium and right ventricle, and the valve located between the left atrium and left ventricle. 1. AV valves prevent the backflow of blood into the chambers when the ventricles contract. 2. Both AV valves have strings called muscles that are attached to the valves located. B. The two semilunar valves are located between the right ventricle and the pulmonary trunk, and the valve located between the left ventricle and the aorta. The semilunar valves are pushed open when the ventricles are contracting.
