13) The graphs below are raw data from a study investigating how an experimental compound affects cell viability. Skin cells were grown in culture and treated with a control solution or a solution containing this experimental compound. Cells were then analyzed for markers of cell death by flow cytometry. Use this information to answer the following questions (6pts). 1) What does propidium iodide detect? a) Release of cytochrome c from mitochondria B) Membrane permeability C) Caspase activation 2) What is happening to the cells in Quadrant 1 (Q1)? a) Cells are healthy and normal b) Cells are undergoing apoptosis c) Cells are dying, but not through apoptosis 3) What can we conclude about how the experimental compound affects cell viability? a) This compound is preventing cell death b) This compound is inducing cell death c) This compound has no effect

The graph above was generated by flow cytometry analysis of a sample of cells stained with propidium iodine. Which of the following statements regarding this cell population is correct? Select all that apply. Options: a) This sample contains more cells in G2 than in G1 b) No cells in this sample are undergoing apoptosis. c) This sample contains a sub-population of cells undergoing apoptosis. d) This sample contains more cells in G1 than in G2

Propidium iodide and antibodies against annexin V were used to generate the result shown in the dot blots. Propidium iodide is a fluorescent dye that cannot penetrate the membranes of living cells and can only enter dead cells where it binds to DNA. Annexin V is a protein expressed by cells in which apoptosis is occurring. Each blot is from analysis of a different batch of cells. Which of the samples (A, B, or C) has the highest percentage of necrotic cells (necrosis is a form of cell death that does not involve apoptosis). Provide rationale for your response.
