3. A large rotary machine has a mass of 1800 kg and when placed on a suspended floor produces a static deflection of 1.8mm. a) Determine the stiffness (N/m) of the floor-machine system assuming the mass of the floor is negligible in comparison with the machine. b) At its operating speed of 1200 rpm, an out-of-balance force of amplitude 5000 N is generated. Assuming a damping ratio of 3%, find the maximum (steady state) vibration of the system. c) Compare the answer to Problem 3(b) with the maximum (steady state) vibration when the system is at resonance.

Step 1
In this case, the static deflection of 1.8 mm can be considered as the displacement caused by the machine's weight. The formula for stiffness is given by: Stiffness (k) = Force (F) / Displacement (x) Since the machine's weight is acting downwards, the force can Show more…

A $120-\mathrm{kg}$ machine is supported on an isolator of stiffness $700 \times 10^{3} \mathrm{~N} / \mathrm{m}$. The machine causes a vertical disturbance force of $350 \mathrm{~N}$ at a revolution of $3600 \mathrm{rpm}$. The damping ratio of the isolator is $\zeta=0.2$. Calculate (a) the amplitude of motion caused by the unbalanced force, (b) the transmissibility ratio, and (c) the magnitude of the force transmitted to ground through the isolator.
