Direct active transport requires direct ATP hydrolysis and is driven by an ion gradient. It transports glucose across membranes. The Na+/K+ ATPase pump is an example of direct active transport. Simple diffusion transports small, nonpolar molecules. Direct active transport transports ions up concentration gradients. Simple diffusion transports water across membranes. Facilitated diffusion is a type of passive transport where the direction of transport depends on the concentration gradient.
