Activity 2: Who would assign an IP address when your computer connects to the network? This is the role of DHCP. First, we are going to do a small role play to mimic DHCP. Each member of the group has a role to play. Assume your group is your local area network (LAN). For example, you could consider a LAN at your home or at our campus or at your workplace. 1. One group member can act as a router with a DHCP server and other three members can act as host devices that try to connect to the network. These host devices could be PCs, printers, and network storage devices. A sample network that you are trying to mimic is shown in the below figure. 2. Assume that all the devices are physical connected as shown in the above figure. Now, your job is to set up the network and establish the connections with the router using DHCP. Each member needs to send/ respond with the correct message following the correct message sequence to establish the connections and to receive an IP address for each host/device. 3. Draw a timing diagram to indicate the sequence of messages that transferred between devices. 4. Next, we are going to implement a DHCP server in Cisco packet tracer and check the DHCP in action. Make sure to take screenshots of the networks you build, analyses, and verifications. Open the packet tracer and implement the following network. You may need to use the same model of the devices shown in the diagram. Today, we are not going to use static IP configuration for the hosts as we are going to check functionalities of DHCP. If you have not watched the video available in Section 5.6 (in Module 5) which provides an overview on how to configure DHCP server in Cisco Packet Tracer, please watch the video before you start the task. Tips: You need to add a module with a fast ethernet port to the router, so that the router can support three LANs as shown in the below network diagram. a. Set up the DHCP server by configuring the network pools, default gateway, and IP address (use the subnets mentioned in the diagram). b. Set up the router by configuring the interfaces and DHCP (use the subnets mentioned in the diagram). c. Set up each host with DHCP to obtain IP configuration and verify the IP address and the default gateway. d. Verify the connectivity between each host in the network.

R2 is now set to be the DHCP server to provide IP addresses for all PC1 to PC6. The first 15 usable IP addresses of the four networks are reserved for static IP addresses. Use the pool name LAN_A for the network 20.0.0.0, LAN_B for the network 21.0.0.0, LAN_C for the network 145.61.0.0, and LAN_D for the network 200.164.20.0. Also, include the default gateway and DNS server in the DHCP assignment. a. Besides the first 15 usable IP addresses of each network, there is one more IP address that should be excluded from the DHCP pool based on the information given. What is it? b. Write the commands on R2 to set up the DHCP server based on the requirement. Also, consider part (a) answer. c. Assume your command typed on R2 is correct, it is found that not all PCs can get the IP addresses from DHCP. i. Which PCs cannot get the IP address? ii. What is the reason for this issue from the lab experience? iii. Write down commands to solve the problem. 2. Assume all PCs got the IP addresses from the DHCP server already. a. Assume the ARP table of PC3 is empty. After pinging from PC3 to PC5, what entry should be added to PC3's ARP table? (You may just refer to which PC or which router interface) b. What is the command to show the ARP table in PC3? c. List all of the devices or router interfaces that would appear in PC5's ARP table if all devices communicate with each other. d. Assume all ARP tables of the devices are empty. When pinging from PC2 to PC3, it is found that the first ping result is "request timed out," but the other 3 ping results are successful. Explain why.
1. Which of the following characteristics distinguishes a PAN from other types of networks? A. A printer is connected to the network. B. The network is intended to be used by one person at a time. C. The network supports wearable devices. D. The network is small in geographical coverage. 2. Your company's network administrator mentions during a meeting that she has migrated your company's database to a DBaaS. What can you deduce about the database, given just this information? A. The database has been backed up. B. The database is now more secure than it was. C. The database is stored on a cloud provider's servers. D. The database has been archived. 3. As you're setting up your home network, you connect one desktop and two laptops to your home router. You then connect your home router to your cable modem. When you test the connection with your desktop, the computer can access websites on the Internet. What functions is your home router providing for your home network? A. Web server and file server B. Web server and router C. Switch and web server D. Router and switch 4. Your family-owned business is growing and has just added a few new employees. The owners decide, for security purposes, that the network needs to be segmented so that only certain people can get to sensitive data. Which of these changes will accomplish this goal most effectively? A. Add a new WAN. B. Divide the network into two LANs. C. Divide the network into two WANs. D. Add a new PAN. 5. Peggy owns a MacBook but needs to install and use an application that only works on the Windows operating system. How can she use the hardware she has to install and use the application? A. Wipe the macOS off her MacBook and install Windows instead. B. Spin up a macOS VM in the cloud and install the application on the VM. C. Create a VM on the MacBook and install Windows and the application on the VM. D. Change the hard drive on her MacBook and install Windows and the application on the new hard drive. 6. Which of the following devices relies on IP addresses to send messages from network to network toward their destination? A. Routers B. Switches C. Servers D. Workstations 7. In what part of a message on the Internet can a router find the destination IP address? A. Data link layer header B. Application layer header C. Transport layer header D. Network layer header 8. Kason creates a server in his private cloud where he will host his new website. Which cloud service model is Kason using for his VM? A. SaaS B. PaaS C. IaaS D. XaaS
