4. A woman's blood pressure is \( 130 / 95 \). You attach a blood pressure cuff to her arm. (a) How much cuff pressure is needed to completely stop the flow of blood in the brachial artery? 180 (b) How high can the cuff pressure be without affecting blood flow in the brachial artery?

- The woman's blood pressure is \(130/95\) mmHg. - \(130\) mmHg is the systolic pressure (pressure during heartbeats). - \(95\) mmHg is the diastolic pressure (pressure between heartbeats). Show more…

The maximum blood pressure in the upper arm of a healthy person is about $120 \mathrm{mmHg}$. If a vertical tube open to the atmosphere is connected to the vein in the arm of the person, determine how high the blood will rise in the tube. Take the density of the blood to be $1050 \mathrm{kg} / \mathrm{m}^{3}$.
You are working in a cardiac unit an are tasked to determine the percentage of blockage in a patients carotid artery. For this patient, you know the average blood velocity for a non blocked artery is 30 cm/s. Using the Dopper Ultrasound, you measure the blood velocity in your patient to be 50 cm/s at the fastest position along the carotid artery. About what percent of the patient's artery is blocked? Note: In this procedure, the patient is lying flat, meaning there is no change in height of the artery. Also, do not include the percent sign in your actual answer. If you do, your answer will be counted wrong. Hint: Suppose A2/A1 = 1/5 (for example) where A2 is the cross sectional area of the blockage and A1 is the area outside the blockage. This would mean that the blockage leaves only 20% (0.2) of the artery open. Or, that the artery itself is 100%-20% = 80% blocked.
