44. In the interaction between damselfish and cleaner fish, if a damselfish has few parasites the cleaner fish will A) add parasites. B) ignore the damselfish. C) bite and eat parts of the damselfish. D) not change its behavior towards the damselfish. 45. Garlic mustard is a plant that has been introduced to North America. It produces a chemical that kills mycorrhizal fungi in the forest where it grows. How would killing mycorrhizal fungi affect native trees in the forest? A) Tree seeds will not be dispersed. B) Tree flowers will not be pollinated. C) Trees will be more vulnerable to herbivores. D) Tree growth will be reduced.

In a mangrove swamp, mangrove tree crabs consume the leaves of mangroves and are food for other animals. By eating decaying mangrove leaves, animal wastes, and dead animals, they help create detritus that forms the base of many of the swamp's aquatic food chains. In addition, they burrow in the wet soil, which mixes air containing oxygen with the soil. What is likely to happen to the stability of the community if a disease destroys the population of mangrove tree crabs? (1 point) Think about how a community adjusts when one species is negatively affected.

Like the southern pine beetle in Figure $56.9,$ the mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) attacks pine trees with the help of a symbiotic fungus that infects the host tree. In 2009 these beetles infested almost 4 million acres of pine forest across Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Oregon, and Washington. How would you determine which pine trees are susceptible to mountain pine beetle attack? How could the fact that this beetle has a symbiotic partner affect approaches for managing the outbreak?
1. On coral reefs, predatory fish such as groupers, snappers and moray eels get cleaned of parasites by the cleaner wrasse. This benefits the predators by getting cleaned and it benefits the cleaner wrasse because it eats the parasites. The cleaner wrasse has a specific color pattern that the predators identify and the predators do not act aggressively toward the cleaner wrasse. The fang-toothed blenny has evolved to look like the cleaner wrasse and pretends to clean the grouper but instead takes a bite of flesh. When fang-toothed blennies are common, some predator species can become aware of them and avoid them but other predators are not good at identifying the fang-toothed blennies. When blennies realize the predators are avoiding them they switch to a new predator species. Answer the following questions below: d) The fang-toothed blenny switching between predator species as they become more aware is an example of what co-evolutionary phenomenon? (5 pts).
