8. Describe sexual reproduction of Porifera, including details about the life cycle. (1 mark) 9. What structures and materials make up the skeletons of Porifera? Describe and draw a sketch (1 mark) Complete the table by writing a cell type or structure in sponges that fits each description. (4 marks) Type of Cell or Structure Description 10. Aid in reproduction and nutrient transport. Helps produce spicules. 11. Form the outside surface of the sponge body. Contract to close porocytes. 12. Line the interior of sponges' body. Use flagella to draw water through pores. 13. Found as a jellylike substance between the two layers. Make up sponges' support system.

L. porus (pore); ferre (to bear). The sponges belong to phylum Porifera. Unlike the rest of the animal kingdom, they have a loose body organization. There are approximately 5000 marine species and 150 freshwater species of sponges. Sponges live at all depths in the sea and range in size from a few millimeters up to 2 m. Water carrying food and oxygen is drawn through the sponge through pores by the beating of flagella on the choanocytes (cells that line the internal cavity). Using your textbook and the PowerPoint slides, answer the following questions about the key characteristics of the phylum Porifera: Type of symmetry: Do sponges have distinct cell layers or tissues and organs? Name the cells of the inner cell layer and their features: How do sponges get food and energy? How do sponges move?

Sponges are cellular grade animals in the Phylum Porifera. First, describe what cellular grade means in relation to sponges. In class, we discussed four different types of sponge cells. Name each type of sponge cell and describe its function in the animal. How do all sponge cells get nutrition and eliminate waste?

Select the total number of statements belonging to sponges: (1) Cellular level of organization. (2) Body is supported by endoskeleton made up of spicules or sponging fibres. (3) Larva stage is morphologically different from adult. (4) Pathway of water transport is helpful in gathering of food, respiratory exchange and removal of waste. (5) Hermaphrodite organism. (6) They show the power of regeneration. (a) 5 (b) 6 (c) 4 (d) 3
