9% Na 0.9% Na The diagram above represents a cell that is suspended in a solution. A. In which direction will water travel? (into cell, out of cell, will not travel) B. If this were a red blood cell, what process would occur?

Using the diagram below, draw arrows to indicate which direction the water and solutes traveled (either into the cell or out of the cell). Figure 2: Diagram indicating the movement of water and solutes Inside Cell Outside of Cell (beaker) Starch Iodine Glucose Water Albumin Water

4. A cell has a concentration of 0.9 osmoles of Na+ ions. It is placed in a solution with a concentration of 2.5 osmoles of Na+ ions. (1.5 pts) Draw this situation. Is the cell in a hypertonic or a hypotonic or an isotonic solution? How do you know this? Can Na+ usually pass right through cell membranes without a protein channel? Why or why not? Which direction will the solute (Na+) move (assuming the necessary transmembrane protein is present)?

The diagram in Figure $12-9$ shows a transporter that mediates the passive transfer of a solute down its concentration gradient across the membrane. How would you need to change the diagram to convert the transporter into a pump that moves the solute up its concentration gradient by hydrolyzing ATP? Explain the need for each of the steps in your new illustration.
