Mrs. H went for a routine mammogram and learned that there is a large mass in her right breast. A biopsy confirmed the presence of a malignant tumor. Mrs. H is worried as there is a family history of breast cancer (her mother and her aunt both had it). No metastases were detected at this time. Her doctor suggested she complete a mastectomy along with the removal of a number of axillary and mediastinal lymph nodes. (Source variation: Gould's Pathophysiology 4th ed.) Explain the potential reason behind this suggestion. If pathological examination of the nodes verified that Mrs. H is in stage III of her cancer, what other treatment recommendations may be given for her breast cancer?
