A 6-1: Projectile with Drag
Consider the projectile problem, where a particle of mass m is launched with initial speed Vo and angle Yo. In addition to the normal gravitational force, we wish to model the aerodynamic drag in the simplest way (but a bit crude) as a force opposing the direction of velocity at any given instant, Fp = -co. Here c is the drag coefficient which we will assume is constant (in practice it is not typically).
a) Draw a FBD and derive relevant equations of motion.
b) Integrate the equations of motion (it is doable by hand) to get solutions x(t) and y(t)
A 6-2: The Particle Rocket Projectile Problem
Here a rocket is to be modeled as a particle, subject to gravitational, drag, and propulsive forces. Consider m(t) to be the mass of the rocket, and that the rocket is launched at an initial angle Yo with zero speed. The propulsion force is given in the notes. Assume that the rate of change of the rocket's mass, m, is some negative constant, such that m(t) = mg + mt, and also that P = P - Pamb = constant. The additional external forces are Fp = cu and gravity.
a) Draw a FBD and derive relevant equations of motion
