Juvenile Diabetes Treatment Juvenile diabetes (also known as Type 1 diabetes) is usually diagnosed in children and has a genetic component. A recent study enrolled 76 children at high risk for the disease. Half the participants were randomly assigned to a two-week intravenous course of the new drug teplizumab while the other half served as the control group. The study ended as soon as 42 people developed the disease, and the results are shown in the table below. Diabetes No diabetes Total Teplizumab 16 22 38 Control 26 12 38 Total 42 34 76 (a) What proportion of those in the control group developed diabetes? (b) What proportion of those in the teplizumab group developed diabetes? (c) Find the difference in proportions using your answers to parts (a) and (b). (d) Is this an experiment or an observational study? (e) If this difference in proportions appears to be strong, can we conclude that the drug is responsible for stopping and/or delaying the onset of the disease? Yes/No
