Chapter 17 Problem 7 SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRAM CHANGES Winston Financial Services (WFS), located in Parsippany, NJ, provides financial advice to small and mid-sized businesses. Its primary operations are in portfolio management and financial services for clients in the healthcare industry. Each client has general business and financial information stored on servers in the main office in Parsippany. Client investment information is stored on a separate server in their Tulsa, Oklahoma data center. This includes the total value of the portfolio, type of investments made, the income structure of each client, and associated tax liabilities. WFS had purchased specialized asset management software called VIEW, which allows the company to run analytics on client portfolios and to run simulations of market trends. The customization and implementation of VIEW were performed by a team of IT professionals from the consulting firm of Cutting Edge Solutions (CES). The contract with CES required them to train a WFS employee to maintain VIEW after the implementation. For this purpose, WFS selected a programmer from their systems maintenance group who was subsequently trained in VIEW's proprietary language and all of its functionality and controls. Two years after the implementation of VIEW, WFS management is now considering investing in a significant custom upgrade to the system. Furthermore, since their contract with CES has expired, they have decided to assign the upgrade task to their in-house maintenance programmer who had been trained in VIEW by CES. Once the project is completed, the programmer will be redeployed to the maintenance group. This is viewed by the WFS management team to be the most feasible and economic approach. Required: a. Discuss the risks associated with the systems development approach. b. What control weaknesses are apparent in this approach?
Question 31 (2 points) Why is it difficult to conduct a security cost-benefit justification for controls before an attack occurs? Question 31 options: There are no widely-accepted models for conducting cost-benefit analysis of security controls Security costs are measured as operational costs while the benefits of security must be depreciated over multiple fiscal years Most security breaches do not have a material economic cost Because it is difficult to assess the impact (cost) of a hypothetical attack Question 32 (2 points) What term is used to describe the process of having independent and unbiased observers examine a company's information systems, their inputs, outputs, and processing and asking questions such as "Are all controls installed as intended?" and "Has any breach of security occurred?" Question 32 options: Control Audit Violation Relationship Question 33 (2 points) Which of the following is NOT one of the objectives listed for the Mission of Arizona State Legislature's Arizona Capital Television (ACTV)? Question 33 options: Strive to educate the public on how government works and how they can be part of the process Provide unedited, gavel-to-gavel coverage of the Arizona State Legislature Offer live internet streaming of all legislative committees which are then archived to be viewed at any time Serve as a virtual "chamber" that allows the the Arizona Legislature to hold online (remote) sessions of the House and Senate Question 34 (2 points) Government services such as tax filing, driver's license renewal, and issuing permits and licenses are typically associated with what aspect of technology? Question 34 options: Government-to-citizen (G2C) Government-to-employee (G2E) Government-to-government (G2G) Government-to-business (G2B) Question 35 (2 points) In the current globalized business environment, which of the following is NOT a driving force related to economic or market business pressure?
