So today, we're told that we have an icu patient that is a 23 -year -old male who has head trauma from a motor vehicle accident.
00:08
We're told that the next day, they have 5 ,000 ccs of urine output.
00:13
And we're asked, why is this a crucial observation? well, basically, because this can indicate some kind of brain injury, right? that there's some problem going on within the brain.
00:25
And because we're having excess urine output, polyurea, that means that.
00:30
That that's likely inappropriate secretion of anti -diuretic hormone, s -i -a -d -h.
00:37
That means that there might be a pituitary injury or pituitary dysfunction.
00:46
And that means that there's some problem, again, going on within the brain, some kind of brain injury.
00:51
And what happens is that inappropriate secretion of this antidioretic hormone can cause an electrolyte imbalance of sodium.
01:02
So we could have low sodium, which is known as hyponatremia.
01:13
And so that would be expected due to the pituitary dysfunction and due to the levels of antidiarratic hormone...
