A problem with fixation is that its final product, nitrogen, is toxic to cells. Although cells need to incorporate ammonia, they need to keep the concentration of free ammonia very low. Cells do this by combining ammonia immediately with one of the TCA intermediates to form a(n) glutamic acid.
