A scientist has developed a new anti-viral drug to treat people with the coronavirus. He believes that this drug will kill the virus and cure people of this disease. In order to test this drug, he gives 10 people with the coronavirus a previously known anti-viral drug for 2 weeks, and monitors their symptoms to see if they get better. He gives another 10 people with the coronavirus a placebo for 2 weeks, and monitors their symptoms to see if they get better. This experiment is missing the ____ group. Experimental Negative Control Positive Control

Step 1
The group that was given the placebo can be considered the negative control group because placebos are not expected to have any effect on the virus. Show more…

HOW THE CORONAVIRUS INFECTS: The virus's spikes bind to the host through receptors. HOW THE CURRENT VACCINE WORKS: Vaccines produce antibodies that can attach themselves to the spike protein and disable it. MEMBRANE PROTEIN ENVELOPE PROTEIN SPIKE PROTEIN ANTIBODY NUCLEOCAPSID PROTEIN AND VIRAL RNA VIRUS THE VIRUS CANNOT BIND PROTEIN RECEPTOR HOST CELL A BETTER VACCINE: Scientists think they can make a vaccine that is more robust to new strains of the virus. Instead of targeting the spike protein, it would use other virus proteins to create antibodies that interfere with the virus's replication. It might also produce a stronger T-cell response. THE VIRUS INJECTS ITS RNA INTO THE CELL ANTIBODIES WITHIN THE CELL RECOGNIZE THE VIRUS NUCLEOCAPSID PROTEIN THE ANTIBODIES BREAK THE VIRUS'S PROTEIN INTO PIECES WHICH ARE DISPLAYED ON THE CELL PROTEIN PIECES LABEL THE CELL AS INFECTED SO T-CELLS CAN COME AND DESTROY IT T-CELL

Scientists have developed a test for a new virus. The test is applied to a saliva sample from a patient and produces a score that provides information on whether the patient is infected with the virus. For any given patient, the score is normally distributed with mean 57 and variance 169. Any patient that has a test score over 77 is classified as a confirmed case of the virus. To reduce pressure on the health system, "low-risk" patients are advised to self-isolate at home rather than be admitted to hospital, where a "low-risk" patient is defined as any patient with a test score below 87. Given that a patient has been classified as a confirmed case of the virus, find the probability that they should self-isolate at home.

Before putting a new drug on the market, pharmaceutical companies must demonstrate its efficacy. Vizer Pharmaceuticals is testing a drug against the West Nile flu. A sample of infected people is tested. Eighty percent are given the new drug while twenty percent are given a placebo (Gatorade). The results of the study are as follows: while thirty percent of all infected people were still sick after a week, twenty percent of the group who received a mere placebo recovered from the disease within a week. Let G be the event that "the patient received the placebo (Gatorade)"; T be the event that "the patient was treated with the drug"; R be the event that "the patient recovered within a week"; S be the event that "the patient was still sick after a week". a) Find the probability that a newly infected person will recover from the disease within a week if treated with the drug. b) Find the probability that a person still sick after a week was treated with the drug. c) Find the probability that a newly infected person will not recover from the disease within a week if treated with the drug. d) Find the probability that a person still sick after a week was not treated with the drug. e) Are the events R and T independent? f) Comment on whether or not the drug is worth marketing.
