A team of environmental scientists is studying a contaminated site where petroleum hydrocarbons have been spilled. They introduce bacteria known for their ability to degrade oil compounds. However, they observe a significant delay before degradation begins. What is the most likely explanation for this observation

You observe an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) and theorize that the indigenous microbial community in the soil will be able to degrade the alkane portion of the spill under sulfate reducing conditions. You set up multiple incubations under the following conditions and monitor the disappearance of sulfate over time. After 100 days of incubation the results are as follows: 1) The enrichment containing GOM sediment + oil + medium showed 99% depletion of sulfate 2) The enrichment containing GOM sediment + medium (no oil was added) showed 25% depletion of sulfate 3) The enrichment containing medium + oil (no GOM sediment was added) had 0% depletion of sulfate 4) The enrichment containing medium + oil + heat-killed GOM sediment had 0% depletion of sulfate What is the hypothesis tested in this study? Select one: a. The indigenous microbial community in the soil will be able to degrade the alkane portion of the spill under sulfate reducing conditions. b. The oil is the substrate in the enrichment and thus will be metabolized by the indigenous microorganisms under sulfate reducing conditions c. In order to clean up the oil sulfate is not required as an electron acceptor d. Oil has an abiotic reaction to the medium component and thus the microorganisms are minor contributors in cleaning up the oil.

When bacteria are inoculated into a new sterile nutrient broth, their numbers don't begin to increase immediately. Instead, there is a lag phase that may last for an hour or even several days. Why don't bacterial numbers increase immediately? A. The bacteria have to establish a biofilm before their numbers can increase. B. There are not enough nutrients for the bacteria to grow, and growth is delayed until there are some dead cells to cannibalize. C. The medium contains inhibitors that prohibit rapid growth of the bacteria, and these must be inactivated before bacterial numbers will increase. D. The bacteria must adjust to the nutrient content in the new medium, synthesizing necessary amino acids, growth factors, and enzymes.

A hyperthermophilic bacterium is put into a nutrient medium that is capable of supporting its growth and incubated at human body temperature (37°C). What do you expect will happen? A. The bacterium will fail to grow. B. The bacterium will adapt to the media during lag phase by changing its cytoplasmic membrane to have a lipid monolayer composed of phytanyls. C. The bacterium will have a longer lag phase, but eventually grow. D. The bacterium will fail to grow because proteins will be denatured. E. The bacterium will grow perfectly.
