A. The mountain climber would suffer from hypercapnia (too much carbon dioxide) because ventilation would be diminished in the low-oxygen atmosphere. B. The mountain climber would suffer from acidosis because the high carbon dioxide concentration would cause an increase in plasma pH. C. The mountain climber would benefit from the low-oxygen-pressure....the hemoglobin-oxygen curve shows that hemoglobin possesses a very high affinity for oxygen at a low oxygen-partial-pressure. D. The mountain climber would be hyperventilating and possibly suffer from alkalosis (caused by the decrease in carbon dioxide-pressure).

This means that the amount of oxygen available for the body to use is reduced. This can lead to hypoxia, a condition where the body or a region of the body is deprived of adequate oxygen supply. A. The climber might suffer from hypercapnia, which is an excess of Show more…

This weekend I was continuously at elevations over 8500 ft, which is considered high elevation. After spending a day or more at high elevation, the concentration of 2,3-BPG (2,3-bisphosphoglycerate) increases rapidly in red blood cells. What effect would an increased 2,3-BPG concentration have on the oxygen-binding curve for hemoglobin? Why would this adaptation be beneficial for functioning well at high elevation?

What would happen if no carbonic anhydrase was present in red blood cells? a. Carbon dioxide would be hydrolyzed into carbonic acid or bicarbonate. The maximum amount of carbon dioxide would be transported in the blood away from the tissues. b. Carbon dioxide would not be hydrolyzed into carbonic acid or bicarbonate. The maximum amount of carbon dioxide would be transported in the blood away from the tissues. c. Oxygen would not be hydrolyzed into carbonic acid or bicarbonate. Only 15 percent of carbon dioxide would be transported in the blood away from the tissues. d. Carbon dioxide would not be hydrolyzed into carbonic acid or bicarbonate. Only 15 percent of carbon dioxide would be transported in the blood away from the tissues.
