A Threat of Litigation, Question 1
INTRODUCTION: A healthcare professional that assists with patients at a surgeon's office encounters a patient who has returned to the office two months after surgery complaining of severe pain in the area of the surgical incision. An x-ray reveals that a sponge was left inside the patient during surgery. The healthcare professional is asked to call the patient to have them come in to speak with the doctor. The surgeon tells the patient about the sponge while the healthcare professional is in the room. Immediately after the surgeon explained what happened, they are called away on an in-office emergency. They ask the patient to come back the next day. The patient is furious.
