LAB 23: URINARY SYSTEM *Note: This handout is intended to help you focus on the major points covered in lab but is in no way a replacement for lab attendance or your textbooks. You need to bring the following items with you to lab every week: * Lab Printout (available on the class Canvas site) * Textbook: Human Anatomy 9th ed. By Martini, Tallitsch and Nath. Before coming to lab each week you should read this handout and the assigned textbook readings listed. EXERCISE 1: URINARY SYSTEM OVERVIEW The urinary system appears simple at first – there are only a handful of organs – however once you dive into the structure and function of the kidneys you will quickly discover that this is complex and amazing organ system! Not only does the urinary system produce urine, it also plays a major role in regulating your blood pressure. PART A: THE BLADDER & URETHRA 1. Identify the following structures on bladder models: * Ureter * Detrusor muscle * Ureteral openings * Internal urethral sphincter * External urethral sphincter * Urethra 2. Perform some internet research on differences in urethra anatomy between males and females. Record down the differences you uncover. How could you tell the difference between a male and female anatomical diagram of the bladder and urethra? 3. Based on that research (and additional research you conduct), explain... a. The anatomical reasons that explain why females are much more prone than males to getting urinary tract infections. b. The anatomical reasons that explain why older males (more so than females) often have slow urination, frequent urination, or difficulty urinating. c. The anatomical reasons that explain why urine abnormalities might be more likely to impact fertility in males than in females.
Part A - Comparison of the male and female urinary structures. Take a look at the medial view of the female image. Human females, unlike most other mammals, have their urethra and vagina separated. Therefore, there is a separate tract to transport urine. However, in males, the reproductive system takes advantage of the urinary tract and transports semen during ejaculation through the urethra. Review the anatomy of the male and female urinary system and label the following images. - Membranous urethra - External urethral orifice - Internal urethral sphincter - Prostatic urethra - Vagina - Bladder - Spongy urethra - Ureter - External urethral sphincter - Pubic symphysis - Prostate
