Objective: To understand the socially constructed concept of race. Directions: Please access the link and watch "Race: The Power of an Illusion - Episode 1: The Difference Between Us." This film examines how scientific discoveries do not support the concept of biological race. The program follows a dozen diverse students who sequence and compare their own DNA. The episode illustrates why it doesn't make scientific sense to sort people into biological races and challenges the concepts of racial superiority. Answer the following questions about this film: 1. What is the difference between a biological and a social view of race? 2. Anthropologist Alan Goodman says that "to understand why the idea of race is a biological myth requires a major paradigm shift." How did the film enlighten your thinking about the concept of race? Is it difficult for you or for others to make this shift? Why? 3. Athletics is one arena where talking about ideas of "inborn racial differences" remains common in our society. After watching the film and understanding that it is not biology that makes the difference, why do you think some populations or groups seem to dominate certain sports but not others? What does it mean that the groups that dominate those sports have changed over time? 4. How does the concept of the self-fulfilling prophecy come into play in regard to how people view race? 5. What instances of cognitive dissonance did you experience while considering the content of this film? 6. Even though race is not biological, why do you think the concept of race is still a major factor in identifying people in our society? 7. Near the end of the film, one of the white students says, "It's easy to be white." Is she implying that white people do not have problems or that they do not struggle? What is the meaning behind this statement?
