All of the following statements are true, however one of them does not support the ecological intelligence hypothesis for the evolution of large brain size in primates: which one? Spider monkeys have larger brain size:body size ratios than howler monkeys Mountain gorillas have larger brain size:body size ratios than gibbons Baboons have larger brain size:body size ratios than geladas

Which of the following statements about primates is TRUE? a. Bonobos are a species of the Great Apes that is known for being somewhat social, but mostly solitary. b. The dominant male of gorilla populations is referred to as the “silverback.” c. Strepsirrhines have more protection around their eyes and have a postorbital closure, whereas Haplorhines have little protection around their eyes and only have a postorbital bar. d. The Great Apes have a smaller body size, long and thin arms, less prominent facial features, and more arboreal adaptations.

1. Which of the following is NOT true about Old World Monkeys? a. They live in a more diverse range of habitats than New World Monkeys b. They are found in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East c. They are characterized by small body sizes d. They include gibbons and baboons 2. The film Clever Monkeys demonstrated all of the following about non-human primates, EXCEPT (i.e. which of the following is not true): a. The complex sociality of primates can lead to status hierarchies, violence, and aggression, as well as compassion and care b. Smaller sized primates do not show many key primate characteristics and are more similar to other mammals and rodents c. Much primate behavior is learned, rather than instinctive d. Some monkeys seem to show behaviors consistent with grieving and paying respects when a member of the group dies

Using the figure and your knowledge of brain development hypotheses (ecological and social), determine if the following statements are correct. Multiple answers are correct. Based on the neocortex size in humans, our ancestors likely lived in smaller groups than other primates. Neocortex size predicts that, on average, apes live in much larger groups than monkeys. The social brain hypothesis suggests that living in complex social groups selected for large brains in humans. The ecological brain hypothesis suggests that selection favored learning how to function in complex environments.
