The flow of water through the kidneys is controlled by the hormone ADH (Anti-Diuretic Hormone). ADH functions by reducing the loss of water from the body (diuretic increases the loss of water from the body). Why would the body use ADH to control the water level in the body instead of using a Diuretic Hormone that would increase the loss of water upon release of the hormone? What advantage would the organism have in controlling water loss with ADH over controlling water loss with a diuretic? Are there any disadvantages you can think of?
