Antibiotic resistance is normally "dominant," meaning that if a bacterium has a gene for a structure such as a ribosome that is sensitive to an antibiotic and a second gene copy that encodes an antibiotic-resistant form of the same structure, resistance will "win out" and the microbe will be antibiotic resistant. This is not the case for streptomycin. Why not?

Antibiotic resistance occurs when an antibiotic has lost its ability to effectively control bacterial growth.
