Antibodies interact with only corresponding antigens by binding to them. When cells or molecules become coated with antibodies, the antibodies form cross-linkages and stick to each other causing clumping or agglutination of cells or molecules. Match the donor's RBC phenotype with the antibodies they induce in others.

Antibody binds to antigen: Antibodies ignore surface proteins but bind to the antigen of the foreign cell, forming an antigen-antibody complex. The role of antibodies in recognizing and inactivating foreign RBCs is shown in Figure 14.4. Formation recognizes the foreign RBC and binds to its antigen. The interaction of these complexes causes foreign RBCs to clump, thus rendering them ineffective. Red blood cells contain both A and B antigens. If you receive a large, whole-blood transfusion of type O blood, what is the effect? (Hint: What is the effect of the type O antibodies on the type AB red blood cells?)

Antibodies to antigens and mark them for destruction. One method of destruction is called lysing, in which each antibody binds two or more antigens. After binding, the antigens are immobilized together in complexes. Repetition of this process produces antigen-antibody complexes. These complexes reduce the presence of antigens.
