Antioxidants can not be made by the body, so you have to consume them from foods. These antioxidants will help neutralize oxygen-containing free radicals which are by-products of cellular metabolism that are especially reactive because they have unpaired electrons in their outer shells. Antioxidants are formed by X-rays and sunlight, but they can also be made by plants. Consuming these will help neutralize oxygen- containing free radicals found in these foods, making them taste better. Oxygen-containing free radicals are neutral molecules that are unreactive and need to be activated by antioxidants. Antioxidants will bind with free radicals and active them, improving cellular metabolism.

Components of food required by the body in small amounts for growth and health maintenance are nutrients that can be converted into another nutrient. These are chemical substances, including many vitamins, that activate specific enzymes. They are also chemical substances that prevent or repair damage to cells caused by exposure to free radicals. They are primarily stored in body fat and the liver and can only be stored in the body in small amounts. Low-grade inflammation that lasts weeks, months, or years is also a component of food. Lastly, there are chemical substances that are missing an electron, known as coenzymes and antioxidants.
