Lag Phase and Exponential Growth in Bacterial Culture The occurrence of a lag phase in which the following factors are essential for the growth of bacteria: ATP, ribosomes, and nutrients. The cells may need to synthesize these factors before they can start multiplying. The cells in the lag phase are different from the cells in the exponential phase and utilize different nutrients. The lag phase is followed by the exponential phase, which is characterized by rapid growth. The growth rate decreases in the stationary phase, and eventually, the cells enter the death phase. The concentration of viable cells decreases in the death phase. In the stationary phase, there is no net growth, and the cells are in a balanced state. The behavior of bacterial culture during exponential growth is characterized by a minimum generation time, reaching maximum concentration, and increasing cell numbers.
