ATPase is an enzyme complex made out of many individual proteins. ATPase generates ATP in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells. Based on that knowledge, which of the following is true about the proteins that the ATPase enzyme is made out of? Question 25 options: A. Those proteins are synthesized by ribosomes associated with the rough ER. B. Those proteins are synthesized by ribosomes within the nucleus. C. Those proteins are synthesized by ribosomes in the cytoplasm and not associated with the rough ER. D. More information is needed.

In each of the cases below, decide whether the indicated protein would be synthesized by a free ribosome or by an ER-docked ribosome. 1. Protein kinase A is an enzyme in the cytoplasm involved in signal transduction of GPCR. 2. Glycotransferase is an enzyme that adds sugars to proteins in the Golgi Apparatus. 3. RNA polymerase 4. A chimera protein that has both the SRP binding signal and a nuclear localization signal. 5. A hormone produced in the brain that targets the heart muscle. Cytochrome c oxidase is an enzyme involved in the synthesis of ATP in the mitochondrion.

Proteins are what genes code for. They perform much of the work of the cell, and there are many kinds of proteins. Each organelle has its own specific proteins that carry out different jobs. All proteins are made in the cytoplasm. If a protein functions in the cytosol, nucleus, mitochondria, or peroxisome, then it is made on a ribosome that is free in the cytosol. If a protein functions in the endomembrane system, then it is made on a ribosome attached to the outside of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. As the protein is made, it is forced through a pore in the endoplasmic reticulum. Inside the rough endoplasmic reticulum, each enzyme listed below is described along with the kind of ribosome on which it is made (cytosolic or RER). If it is made on a ribosome attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum, the final destination of the protein is the endomembrane system. Protein Ribosome type Location Endomembrane system (if applicable) RNA polymerase (synthesizes RNA during transcription) Testosterone synthesizing enzyme Amino acid transporter (brings amino acids into intestinal cells) DNA polymerase (makes DNA) Aldolase enzyme (glycolysis) Mature acid hydrolase that will function as an intracellular peptidase
