Peers post: My experiences with disability narratives stem from my childhood. I attended a grade school with a mixture of able body children and kids with disabilities. Looking back, I wish there were more schools like that one because kids were signed up to volunteer and help around the different classrooms. It taught us patience, empathy, and that everyone is born different. I have memories of watching these kids with disabilities interact and being able to tell when their favorite person would walk into the room. Most of them couldn’t speak but their body language was strong. As I grew up, I learned more about different people through documentaries, tv shows, and elderly people. When disability intersects with race or gender, it complicates the narrative and shows us that oppression is not one-dimensional. A person of color, woman, or minority with disabilities can be face hurtful stereotypes, receive different levels of treatment with healthcare, and get overlooked for a job, if they are able to get a job at all. 1.
