Birds of Prey: Sampling Activity SBI4U The birds at the top of the food chain in Ontario have historically been the bald eagle (Hallaeetus leucocephalus) and peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus anatum). These birds of prey experienced a decline in their population due in large part to the widespread use of chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides, such as DDT. As a result, peregrine falcons were locally extinct in Ontario and bald eagles were reduced to a limited range at the northern edge of human settlement in the province. Both species have made impressive comebacks and have been removed from the endangered list in parts of Ontario within the last decade.

Extinct birds. Biologists at the University of California (Riverside) are studying the patterns of extinction in the New Zealand bird population. (Evolutionary Ecology Research, July 2003.) At the time of the Maori colonization of New Zealand (prior to European contact), the following variables were measured for each bird species: a. Flight capability (volant or flightless) b. Type of habitat (aquatic, ground terrestrial, or aerial terrestrial) c. Nesting site (ground, cavity within ground, tree, cavity above ground) d. Nest density (high or low) e. Diet (fish, vertebrates, vegetables, or invertebrates) f. Body mass (grams) g. Egg length (millimeters) h. Extinct status (extinct, absent from island, present) Identify each variable as quantitative or qualitative.

California condors, large, predatory birds that were previously on the edge of extinction, have benefited from a program that raises birds in captivity and then releases them into the wild. The reintroduction program, however, is having variable success. If it were determined that condor reproduction along the coast is being harmed by DDT in the condors' foods, which of the following actions would be most useful to improve the situation? Remove all eggs from condor nests in the coastal population so that there will be no hatchlings with DDT. Move all condors away from the area where DDT exists. Provide carcasses of animals without DDT that the condors can eat. Monitor DDT use in the area where reproduction is failing.
