Heartbeat Your heart beats by first contracting the atria and then the ventricles. Your heartbeat sounds like "lub-dub". What you actually hear is valves in your heart closing and the blood recoiling against the valves indicating the closing of the valves both in the 'lub' and the 'dub' parts.
