In an experiment, independent variables are those that change or affect dependent variables in some way. For example, if there are fewer jobs available in a certain community (independent variable), there may be higher unemployment rates (dependent variable). For this activity, use a sociological lens to examine the relationship between independent and dependent variables in a small experiment. Consider factors that you believe may cause others, such as lower rates of people with health care coverage and higher rates of untreated or uncontrolled chronic diseases. Hypothesize the relationship between an independent variable and a dependent variable. Describe each variable, and create a simple experiment to test it.
