My back has been hurting for the past year, now my neck also starts to hurt, but I've just been dealing with the pain and avoiding coming-in to the doctor. What do you think?" Nurses note: "Ms. Thelma Jones is a 75-year-old widow, complaining of severe right hip pain following a fall this morning. She reports moderate back pain for the past year. She measures at 5'3" and weighs 102 pounds. Her temp is 98.6, pulse 84, and blood pressure 130/80, and her oxygen levels are at 98%." Case Study Assessment Task: Below are 3 case studies. You are required to complete all 3. You need to read these and based on the situation/case provided, identify the anatomy/physiology involved as related to the Skeletal System, what is going wrong or has occurred, and how that impacts the Skeletal System specifically. You also need to provide an explanation for how the Skeletal System responds to the situation. 1) Anthony has been living in Western WA for 3 years. After moving from California and seeing his health decline, including weight gain, fatigue, joint pain, arthritis, and weakness, he decided to go to the doctor to get checked out. The doctor discovered Anthony has a Vitamin D deficiency (which you should have figured out in module #1). Anthony also has deterioration in his joint cavities, specifically on the distal end of his femur and humerus. After an X-ray they also found stress fractures on his tibia. 2) Madeline Jacobson was on a hike in the mountains during the winter months. While hiking up a ravine of rocks, Madeline stepped on a loose rock causing her leg to move too far to the mid-line of the body as well as twisting at the same time. In doing so she heard multiple pops in her knee and immediate pain. Madeline quickly fell to the ground and was not able to walk. Madeline quickly sent a radio message to her friend who was over a mile behind her. As she lay there waiting for her friend to arrive she realized she was getting really cold and her knee was quickly swelling creating an immovable joint. Madeline also tried to stand up but was unable to place weight on her left leg. *make sure to consider the entire structure of the knee, injuries, responses, etc. 3) Madeline's friend Bobbi showed up shortly after and carried Madeline 4 miles down the mountain to a helicopter to be airlifted to the hospital. In carrying Madeline, Bobbi damaged her shoulder to the point where she was diagnosed with ligament tears and a shoulder separation. The ligament that tore, helps hold the proximal end of the humerus into the shoulder. Another ligament tore completely out of the periosteum of scapula, leaving bone fragments.
