Topic: Molecules A molecule is formed when two or more atoms are held together by a chemical bond. There are two types of strong chemical bonds, ionic bonds and covalent bonds. These bonds hold atoms together differently in a molecule. (See the Chemical Bonds section of Chapter 2.1) How do ionic bonds form? (See Figure 2.5) What is an ion? Compare cations and anions. Chemical bonds form when these subatomic particles interact between two atoms. The two strong chemical bonds are covalent bonds and ionic bonds. Electrons are involved in covalent bonds, while electrons are involved in ionic bonds. The weakest bond is the hydrogen bond, which requires the presence of a molecule. In order to form a chemically stable bond, the outermost electron shell, called the valence shell, must be full. Then the atom can form single covalent bonds. A single carbon atom, with atomic number 6, can form single covalent bonds. A single oxygen atom, with atomic number 8, can form double covalent bonds. Can a chloride ion (atomic number 17) form an ionic bond with a magnesium ion (atomic number 12)? (hint: one ion positive and one ion negative) A magnesium ion has a charge of +2 and a chloride ion has a charge of -1. List 3 properties of water which are of benefit to organisms.
