Which of the following statements accurately compares the steps in urine production? Secretion is the first step in urine production, and then filtration and reabsorption occur simultaneously. Filtration and reabsorption produce filtrate, whereas secretion converts filtrate into urine. Filtration, reabsorption, and secretion all occur in the renal tubules. Filtration occurs in the renal corpuscles, whereas reabsorption and secretion occur in the renal tubules.
Formation of Urine Glomerular filtration rate is maintained at a stable level and primarily regulated by controlling the diameter of afferent arterioles. Fluid is forced out of the glomerular capsule and enters the tubules. This fluid has the same composition as plasma except for larger molecules, such as proteins, which cannot fit through the glomerular pores. Useful substances are removed from the tubules and sent back to the blood. This process is called reabsorption and largely takes place in the proximal convoluted tubules. Unwanted substances are moved from the blood to the filtrate. This process is called tubular secretion. The filtrate flows down the tubules, moving past increasingly hypertonic interstitial fluid. Water pores are present, and water moves out by osmosis. Hormones control the level of water pores. The remaining filtrate is now called urine.
